Dynamics of Sheet and Cloud Cavitation

Nucleation, interfacial and large-scale dynamics of sheet and cloud cavitation are considered. The scales, scaling and interaction of these phenomena are discussed. Experimental results from various canonical flows about axisymmetric bodies and hydrofoils are used to elucidate the relevant physics.
The smallest length-scales involve nucleation and potentially surface effects. Effects of surface topology, cavity leading edge and interfacial phenomena occur at intermediate scales and shedding or cloud cavitation at large scales.
Surface features and topology have the potential to affect all these phenomena, or scales, along with passive and active nucleation as candidate measures for control and mitigation.

Prof. Paul Brandner

Paul Brandner is Research Leader of the Cavitation Research Laboratory (CRL) at the Australian Maritime College, University of Tasmania. He received BE (Hons) and PhD degrees from the University of Tasmania in 1991 and 1996 respectively. His main research interests are in nucleation physics and the role these play in cavitation inception and dynamics more generally. He conceived and has led the development of the CRL. He has developed a range of international government and academic collaborations resulting from CRL capabilities and research outcomes. He was appointed Professor in 2018 and elected Fellow of the Australasian Fluid Mechanics Society in 2022, ’In recognition of outstanding research into cavitation, multi-phase flows and development of hydrodynamic facilities’.
